Winter Tips for Fun and Safety

Winter can be an exhilarating
and fun-filled time for animals and their
humans. Cooler weather invigorates many dogs, and
snow is the best dog toy ever invented. They can chase it,
eat it, roll in it, slide on it and basically express their
most imaginative and comical impulses. Take advantage
of snowy days to explore this joyous side of your best friend.
And be aware that cold weather can present
problems for animals that spend most of their time in doors.
That fur your best friend is sporting may not provide adequate
protection from the elements during severe weather. Consider
a coat for short hair breeds, and foot protection if you are
walking on icy or salted streets. If your dog is
shivering, get him/her to a warm place right away.
Be especially wary of
slush. Remember your high school chemistry? Salt
lowers the melting point of water. That slushy sidewalk
can be much colder than ice and can injure your dog’s
feet. Never tether your dog in a slushy spot while
you shop or have a coffee. Be sure to wash slush and salt
from your dog’s paws when you return home. Don’t
forget to wipe between the toes.
Cold weather can also exacerbate the pain
and stiffness associated with arthritis in older animals,
so now may a good time to consider the DR.
